Wigan Warriors dug deep to survive a brutal Challenge Cup quarter-final, edging Wakefield Trinity 26-22 in a heart-stopping clash that sets up a monumental semi-final showdown with arch-rivals St Helens next month.
Matt Peet’s side entered this tie as underdogs after back-to-back defeats, facing a Wakefield team surging as a Super League force. But they weathered an early storm and late pressure to keep their record-extending 22nd Challenge Cup title dream alive.
The drama unfolded from the kickoff. Wakefield exploded out of the gates, with Jake Trueman and Ky Rodwell crossing for tries to build a commanding 12-0 lead. Wigan looked rattled, but they clawed back with Patrick Mago and Liam Marshall answering with tries of their own.
Just as momentum swung, Tom Johnstone delivered a spectacular finish to put Wakefield back ahead. But the game turned on a critical sin-bin. Wakefield forward Jazz Tevaga was sent off for kicking out at Marshall, and Wigan capitalized immediately.
Harry Smith burrowed over on the stroke of half-time to nudge Wigan ahead 18-16. Then, with Tevaga still sidelined, Zach Eckersley scored his first try to extend the lead. Wakefield fought back valiantly—Cam Scott crossed shortly after Tevaga’s return to level it at 22-22.
But Wigan held their nerve in the final quarter. A brilliant piece of play sent Eckersley over in the corner for the decisive try, making it 26-22. Wakefield threw everything at Wigan’s line in the dying minutes, testing it with frantic last-ditch attacks, but the Warriors’ defense stood firm.
This sets up a mouthwatering semi-final against St Helens, a clash of titans that promises fireworks. In the other semi-final, holders Hull KR will face Warrington, ensuring a thrilling climax to the Challenge Cup.
