Wrexham’s push for a historic fourth straight promotion hit a massive roadblock on Saturday, as Birmingham City dominated them 2-0 at St Andrew’s. The loss leaves Phil Parkinson’s side four points behind sixth-placed Hull City with just four games remaining in the Sky Bet Championship season.
Carlos Vicente broke the deadlock three minutes after halftime, nodding in his third goal since joining Birmingham in January. Christoph Klarer sealed the points in the 71st minute, stabbing home from close range to cap a relentless performance from the hosts.
Birmingham, who had lost three consecutive matches coming in, oozed confidence in front of a packed house. They controlled the game from start to finish, forcing Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo into a string of first-half saves to keep the visitors in contention.
Okonkwo denied headers from Ibrahim Osman and August Priske early on, then reacted quickly to stop Vicente in a one-on-one situation just before the break. But there was nothing he could do when Kai Wagner delivered a perfect cross for Vicente to head home at the far post.
Wrexham’s attack was utterly toothless throughout the match. They failed to register a single shot on target against Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle, who was a mere bystander in this one-sided affair.
The visitors managed only a couple of long-range efforts from Oliver Rathbone and Callum Doyle in the first half. Even when Parkinson brought on substitutes Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead in the second period, Wrexham couldn’t generate any meaningful threat.
Birmingham’s dominance was reflected in the stats. They created numerous chances, with Paik Seung-ho’s inswinging corner setting up Klarer’s clinching goal after the defender muscled Max Cleworth out of the way at the far post.
This victory lifts Birmingham to 15th in the table, ending a winless streak that had stretched over a month. For Wrexham, it’s a second consecutive defeat that severely dents their playoff hopes, leaving them with minimal margin for error in the final stretch of the season.
The tactical battle was decisively won by Birmingham manager Chris Davies, whose side pressed high and controlled possession. Wrexham, chasing an unprecedented fourth straight promotion, looked disjointed and lacked the cutting edge needed against a disciplined Birmingham defense.
With four games left, Wrexham now face an uphill climb to catch Hull City. This performance suggests they’ll need a dramatic turnaround in form to keep their promotion dreams alive.
