Nottingham Forest clawed another point toward Premier League survival in a tense 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at the City Ground. Neco Williams’s second-half strike canceled out an early own goal from Murillo, lifting Forest three points clear of the relegation zone. The final whistle brought a roar from the home crowd, amplified by news that Tottenham were still trailing at Sunderland—a result that further bolsters Forest’s safety hopes.
Villa arrived without key figures. Emiliano MartÃnez pulled out during warm-ups for the third time this season, forcing backup Marco Bizot into action. Ezri Konsa, a defensive stalwart for club and country, was relegated to the bench. Despite those absences, Unai Emery’s side carved out the clearer chances but failed to convert them.
Morgan Rogers skied a shot from close range after Matz Sels parried Ross Barkley’s low drive. Ollie Watkins, fresh off a midweek brace in Bologna, lashed a clean opportunity over the bar with 11 minutes of regular time remaining. Emiliano Buendia’s precise pass sent Watkins through, but the striker couldn’t keep his composure.
Forest struggled to test Bizot for much of the match. Manager Pereira turned to veteran Chris Wood with almost half an hour left, marking the 34-year-old’s first Premier League appearance since October. It was Williams who emerged as the hosts’ most dangerous threat, hammering a first-time right-foot shot inside Bizot’s near post to level the score.
Bizot made a crucial save just after the hour, using his left leg to deny Morgan Gibbs-White’s deflected effort. Gibbs-White had latched onto Igor Jesus’s layoff, with his rushed shot taking a dangerous deflection off Matty Cash. Williams nearly doubled his tally later in the half, but a similar effort was blocked.
Villa captain John McGinn forced a save from Sels with a curled effort toward the bottom corner. Sels, restored in goal as one of nine changes for Forest, held firm under pressure. Youri Tielemans dawdled after Watkins squared a late chance, and Cash saw another attempt blocked in the dying moments.
Emery praised Watkins’s resilience on Thursday, but the striker’s miss here highlighted Villa’s profligacy. This marks the fourth consecutive season Villa have left the City Ground without a win, dropping points that could prove costly in their European push. These teams could meet again in a Europa League semi-final later this month, but for now, survival remains Forest’s sole focus.
