President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio took in a UFC event at Miami’s Kaseya Center on Saturday night, drawing cheers from the crowd as Vice President JD Vance delivered grim news from Pakistan: peace talks with Iran had collapsed.
Trump arrived just after 9 p.m., flanked by family members and UFC CEO Dana White, a longtime political ally. The president’s entourage included three of his children—Ivanka, Tiffany, and Donald Jr.—while his son-in-law Jared Kushner was overseas with Vance for the failed negotiations.
Seated nearby were Rubio, U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, rapper Vanilla Ice, and former FBI deputy director Dan Bongino. Despite sagging approval ratings and public discontent over the Iran conflict, Trump received a roaring ovation as Kid Rock’s music blared through the arena.
He worked the room, shaking hands with fans, posing for photos, and greeting the UFC broadcast team, which featured influential podcaster Joe Rogan. For much of the evening, Trump appeared laser-focused on the action inside the cage, though he occasionally leaned over to confer with Rubio, who at one point showed him something on his phone.
Meanwhile, Vance told reporters that discussions with Iran had broken down, citing Tehran’s refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions as the key sticking point. “We need to see an affirmative commitment that [Iran] will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance said. “That is the core goal of the president of the United States, and that’s what we’ve tried to achieve through these negotiations.”
The vice-president revealed he had spoken with Trump at least six times during the talks, but the president showed no outward signs of stress from the diplomatic setback. Instead, he was engrossed in the fights, including a bloody brawl between Josh Hokit and Curtis Blaydes.
After Paulo Costa beat Azamat Murzakanov in the co-main event, the victor approached Trump to shake his hand. The president’s passion for UFC—a sport credited with boosting his appeal among young male voters—was on full display.
Trump has announced a White House UFC event for June 14, his 80th birthday, to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary. Following Saturday’s card, Dana White revealed that a bout featuring Hokit had been added to the June lineup at Trump’s request.
“President Trump built half of that fight, Rogan built the other half,” White said in a social media video. “Both guys have agreed and accepted the fight.”
